19th of Lanth: Conclavus - Council of Twelve

19th of Lanth

Brakkis had been a mage for the established Concordance of Wizards for the Conclave for over seventy years. He had received his position just after The Chains that kept Ivendall had finally been built. He had then preceded to stay on the Council's good side for the rest of his life. In the mean time, he had outlived several other mages and wizards though many a regime change. Never before though in all of his time had he ever been call in because of a "security issue".

He was now standing in front of the tall mahogany doors that would show him before the council of twelve. Twelve shadowy mages who would sit in front of the council and then try to pass judgement, on him of all people. This whole thing was a debacle and a mess on top of that and he was the one that they were going to blame. He was the one whom they were going to show as scapegoat to the rest of the city.

He would be damned if he let them do that to him.

He knocked politely on the door and then entered the chamber. The room had been done in the stately colors of Conclavus, a pale grey, a bright and vibrant blue, and a mottled silver. The symbol of Conclavus was etched into the stone ground of the floor so that all who walked over the threshold knew with whom they were about to speak. Ahead of him, the raised dais with the semi circle of Mahogany and carved dragon's bone made a magnificent desk behind which twelve shadowed people sat. Their robes were different colors, their body structures, hair and all other things about them were wholly different, however, in one aspect, they were all the same.

They all looked as if someone had washed them over with a wash of grey and shadows. This wash prevented their faces from being beheld, but their eyes, all the different types and shapes, were all seen clearly through the obvious illusion. No one was supposed to know who was on the Council. Even a whisper of whom might be on it was punishable by death. The council was to brook no favorites, and as to when the council members changed, no one knew.

In this instance though, as head of Conclavus security, he should have known, but he had given up that title long ago, and now, he stood here to mock those very same people who had forced him to give up the title. He looked across the table of shadowed mages, wrapped in shadowed black and chuckled to himself, until he het the edge of the table. He felt his whole body stiffen as he realized that he was looking at a Trumpet Archon. Usually they were relegated to the outside of the city, and were never called upon unless there was a great breach of security. Something was not right here. They could not have simply called him back to see what was going on at all here. Something else was going on.

A sepulchral voice spoke from the right side of the table. "Brakkis. It has been a long while since you have been before this council..."

Brakkis cut in. "Indeed. The last time I was in front of this council, I was relieved from my position of Head of Security and Protection Magicks." His voice was gruff, but one had to spend years as a Battle Mage to understand why. He had spent many a year as a Battle Mage, and then some. He had even fought in the Sorceress Wars.

"Indeed," said a female voice. "we have come to understand the error of that way."

Brakkis snorted. "Have you? Or are you merely covering all you collective asses at this moment."

Another voice, which was smooth almost like silk, but with just a hint of masculinity in it spoke. "We all have read the transcripts of what happened that day. You made a threat to this Council."

Brakkis remembered. "It was not a threat, so much as a promise."

Another voice from the council responded, this one sounded a little dry. If he did not know better, he would have said that it sounded like his old mentor. "Yes indeed. It was a promise that if let you go, that someone would be able to break in."

At this the female voice took over. "Yes, and lo and behold! Someone did break in. Not only that, but they made it into the Black Vaults where we keep our forbidden books!"

At this Brakkis laughed. "Of course you would call me then! I must have been the person who broke into the Black Vaults!"

A breathy voice on the council that was obviously female responded. "Then you admit to your guilt?"

Brakkis grinned in the direction of the voice. "How could I? I had to be specifically teleported in from another city. There was no way that I could have come and gone in the time that was allotted to this crime."

The sepulchral voice spoke again. "That is not to say that you could have done it without help."

Brakkis shook his head. "When I was the head of security, it was I who ordered the death of the Architect. You all were soft then, much as you are now and had to wait till he died of natural causes before you decided that it was time to go after his granddaughter."

A cackle emanated from one side of the table. "We didn't go after his granddaughter, we tried to sell her into slavery."

Brakkis pointed a finger at the voice. "And it didn't work, and now look where we are. Some people broke in using her help and stole from us. Stole from Conclavus! How do you expect to get it back?"

The council in front of him remained silent and said nothing in response to his outburst. Brakkis looked at them all and then pointed to the Archon that was also in the room. "We may have used them all in the Sorceress Wars, but why are they still here? Did we not banish them and the Security measures that used them?"

The breathy female voice responded to his question. "They were brought back shortly after you were resigned from your position. It seemed a shame not to use a security measure that was not already there."

Brakkis frowned and narrowed his eyes. "You still using them is fine, but waiting till after I left? Who authorized it?"

The dry voice responded. "Of course we put it to a vote within this council and it was ordered that it was to be done. It was that simple."

Brakkis fumed where he stood and was tempted to leave when he looked across the council. "So why have you called me back?"

Another voice, a little higher than the rest and obviously more clear spoke out. "We want your expertise Brakkis. We want you to once again take your position back as the Head of Security and Protections of Conclavus. Those of us who are new to this council have all agreed that perhaps your being let go was a mistake and have placed it to a vote within and almost by unanimous vote, it was agreed to see if we could ask you."

Brakkis was not expecting this. He thought they were going to blame this whole debacle on him. There had to be a catch. "So you want to offer me my old job back again. What for? Something must have been mistaken as to why you wish to do it. Why do you want me back?"

Brakkis could have sworn that he heard the voice chuckle before it answered, even though he wasn't sure it it was male or female that spoke. "Brakkis, what better way to find who broke in than to hire the only person who might be capable of finding them?"

Brakkis bit his lower lip and then said in a low tone, "I will have to think on this."

There was a high pitched giggle and someone who sounded like an old woman cackled from behind the table. "Dear me Brakkis. You are not being given a choice in the matter. This is not something that we are just offering to you and asking you to come back to. We are telling you Brakkis that you are now going to be in charge of this new position and on top of that, we are telling you that it is effective immediately."

"What? You are just giving me back my job like nothing happened then?"

The pitched voice responded. "We are the Council of Twelve."

Another voice spoke out. This one sounding like they had been rolling rocks around in their mouth. "As a matter of fact, we are dropping the investigation into your hands, but not only that, we are appointing you a task force."

The breathy voice spoke and said, "That is correct. We cannot be seen as having a weakness. So we are asking that Lyssiandra be called in at this time."

Brakkis' eyes almost bulged out of his skull when he heard the woman's name. At that moment the doors behind opened up and striding though the doorway was a woman who was dressed in emerald green and golds. She walked as regally as she could, considering that her dress was a front. It was tied neatly just below her breast by a thing golden ribbon and underneath it was slashed to reveal that she was wearing pants and the blouse divided and ended just past her shoulders. She was wearing long brown doe-skin leather gloves that had been tooled at the cuffs which were turned down. The cuffs were embroidered with long golden threads so that they were twisted around in such a way that they looked like a vicious animal.

The woman's hair was tied behind her head in a casual bun that allowed for two braided strands to leave from the front of her temples and curve just below her ears and then gather again at the nape of her neck and trail down the rest of her back along with the rest of her auburn hair, which cascaded just below her waist. Long calf high black boots hugged her feet and clicked softly across the stone floors. She walked next to Brakkis and then bowed delicately towards the general direction of the council table.

"Lyssiandra of House Lyons, First amongst Houses, here at your request." Her voice was musical and she smiled with a quirk on the side of her mouth as she looked at Brakkis.

Brakkis turned and looked at the council, his eyes smoldering and then pointed at the woman standing next to her. "House Lyons? This is your response?"

The sepulchral voice responded. "We are Conclavus. We are the magical center of the world and we are the most powerful people in the world. We prevent the population of Pernishia from going crazy! We are not to be brought low by a set of common thieves! We are going to give Lyssiandra Lyons permission to send out a call." The shadow which the voice belonged to pointed to Brakkis at this moment and then said, "We expect you to work hand and hand with her on this."

Brakkis shook his head. "I will not work with House Lyons or anyone who is affiliated with it. As you know very well, the House of Gryphon is not fond of House Lyons after what they did to one of our own."

The breathy voice on the council tittered for a moment and then said,"We can hardly be held responsible for a bad marriage contract."

Brakkis snarled and then snapped. "It can hardly be called a bad marriage contract when the bride is murdered by the groom's House!"

Lyssiandra smiled and brushed a stray hair from in front of her face that didn't exist. "We can hardly be blamed for the misunderstanding that occurred. It was never proved that he did indeed kill her..."

"Her blood was tainted with one of his necromancy spells!" Brakkis was fuming.

Lyssiandra smiled and crossed her arms across the front of her chest and then said, "The signature of a mage can be faked."

"It was one of his experimental spells that no one else was able to cast." Brakkis narrowed his eyes at Lyssiandra.

She shrugged her shoulders. "Oh well, needless to say, Conclavus and the Council of Twelve have called me here. What can I do for all of you?"

There was a cackle and the old woman's voice responded. "What on earth do you think we want? We want you to send out a call for the Bishops!"

Lyssiandra tried to look surprised, but Brakkis knew for a fact that she was not surprised at all. Something this big could not be let to just any normal people. This had to be taken care of by a large group. Anyone who was able to break into Conclavus and steal from the Black Vaults was no ordinary person at all. Therefore, they would require something more than an ordinary police source.

Lyssiandra smiled her lopsided smile once more and then said, "By the power invested in this council, I will most assuredly call forth the full might of the Bishops of House Lyons and place them at the disposal of the Council of Twelve." She then turned to Brakkis and smiled maliciously.

The old woman's voice cackled and the soft voice from before who had told Brakkis that he was being hired again spoke. "They will not be at the mercy of this council. They will in fact be under the jurisdiction of the new Head of Security andProtections of Conclavus."

At this Brakkis looked surprised, but Lyssiandra looked shocked. She looked first to Brakkis and then to the council. "You mean I will have to answer to him?" Her voice was pitched just slightly. The shadowed figure nodded it's head in agreement and it was Brakkis' turn to look malicious.

15th of Septus: Tevin's Cross

15th of Septus

The childe scuttled across the floor towards the main room. He moved towards the chair that was sitting in front of the tall fireplace. He bowed, just barely bobbing his head in the direction of the chair.

"Mother," he spoke in a rasping voice, "We have another visitor."

The woman who was sitting in the chair stirred only slightly. She reached a single hand out towards the boy and the boy quivered for a moment, fearing punishment. The woman's voice a like silk and she spoke in a calming voice.

"Do not worry Johsiah. I am not displeased with you, I am just amused by the fact that we have more visitors, and not even three days have passed." The woman stood up and stretched slightly. Her skin still appeared supple in the firelight, but she could feel the sagging that was happening. She could tell that her skin was getting old and there was nothing else that she could do. She would have to have another dinner to solve the problem.

"Allow them inside Johsiah. I will meet with them here." The boy nodded his head and then quickly scuttled out of the room. The woman sighed for a moment and then walked towards a small mirror that was on the wall. It faced the only entrance to the room and she looked at her eyes and the contour of her face in the mirror. She took a finger and  ran it under her left eye. As she did so, she noticed almost as if by magic, that the crows feet that were not there, were starting to appear. She frowned at the older woman in the mirror.

The magic was wearing off.

At that moment, she saw the reflection of Johsiah and then two men behind him. She spun around and then smiled. "Welcome gentleman. How may I be of service to you?"

The first man, a tall lanky fellow with dark brown hair that was in a tangle, wearing a chain shirt under a tunic of blue with a large golden lion over his breast. "Is your name Ma'mdre Catheil"

Avera Catheil smiled and said,"Why yes, that is what I have been going by for quite a while. How am I able to help you two?"

The man looked to the other, who was dressed similarly nodded his head and then said, "We have reason to believe that a band of adventurers had come through here. We have reason to believe that they are the same people who stormed and robbed Conclavus on the Nineteenth of Lanth."

Ma'm Catheil smiled slightly and then said, "I don't think I know at all what you are talking about."

The second man, most obviously a Bishop, frowned and then said, "We actually followed them here Ma'mdre..."

"That's Ma'm to you. You may not use my true appellation as you are not of the faith."

Avera had a strange look in her eyes and the first Bishop coughed before he spoke, "Pardon us Ma'm Catheil."

The woman nodded her head and then inclined a hand towards the first Bishop. "Please, tell me what it is that you have to say then."

The first Bishop nodded his head and then said, "We actually followed them to this area Ma'm Catheil. So we have reason to believe that they had stopped here on their way to somewhere else."

Avera arched an eyebrow. "So you think that whoever broke into Conclavus actually stopped here? What would that be fore then?"

The second guard interrupted, "You know about Conclavus?"

The woman waved her hand in the air and shook her head as she turned and took two steps towards the Bishops that were within her home. "Of course I know about Conclavus. Who wouldn't have heard about it then? They are just the most powerful people in the world was all."

The first Bishop nodded and then responded. "You can see our hesitation to just walk away from this Ma'm..."

Avera smiled and then began to walk towards the dining room. "I can see what you mean then good sirs. In the meantime, we can continue this discussion in a more comfortable place then for me?"

The second Bishop looked around and then looked at the kid who was standing in the doorway right behind them. A look of disgust passed over his face as he looked at the filthy urchin. "I trust it will be easier to talk to you then?"

Ma'm Catheil turned and looked over her shoulder. "Of course. If you wouldn't mind joining me for a quick supper then?"

The flaxen haired Bishop nodded his head. The other followed after him. The woman walked into the next room and as she did so, she called out.

"Jierra, please get something ready for the table here darling. Perhaps, I believe it is Heather's turn to serve dinner this time."

The woman sat down at the head of the table and then smiled and motioned to two other chairs on either side of her. "Please, sit gentleman."

The Bishops both nodded their heads and sat down. A few moments later, a young girl walked out towards the table and climbed up on it. Ma'm Catheil smiled a rather wicked smile and then said, "Ahhh, Heather, a pleasure for you to join us. Please serve diner."

The girl smiled and then pulled a knife from her belt. The first Bishop looked on placidly, but it was the second Bishop who saw the knife. He tried to get up, but there was nothing to be done. Ma'm Catheil frowned and waved her hand and the Bishop seemed frozen to the spot. He was forced to watch as the girl took the knife and plunged it into her stomach and then jerked the serrated knife upwards towards her heart. She then reached into her stomach and  pulled out the fleshy part from the inside of her chest cavity.

"I hope you two don't mind," said Ma'm Catheil, "I do love a little liver at times."

The first Bishop then calmly got up and drew his short sword. "I am sorry Ma'm, but we will have to take you in for questioning and for harboring information."

The small girl on the table passed the bloody chunk that was her liver to Ma'm Catheil and continued gushing blood over the table. The older woman took it and then frowned as the girl swooned backwards in a moan of something that sounded a little like a strangled cat and pleasure all at the same time.

"Really now gentelmen, is that how you treat a lady after she has allowed you into her home?" Avera narrowed her eyes and twisted her hand once more. The second Bishop made a strangled cry.

The first Bishop lunged forwards towards Ma'm Catheil. She raised her hands and two of the grubby urchin children who were hiding in the darkness flew forwards to attack the man.

"Children! Protect your Mother!" Her cry echoed through the house and as it did, eyes peered through the darkness of the house. The First bishop pulled forth his holy symbol and spoke to the fallen priestess.

"By order of Conclavus, I now pronounce a Judgement on you Ma'mdre Avera Catheil, daughter of..." He was suddenly cut off by a small boy who lunged for his jugular with long taloned fingers. His sword swung though the air, smacking the child stoutly in the stomach and cutting him savagely. The child fell to the floor in a whimper and was soon set upon by the other children who were near him like rabid wolves.

The Bishop raised his holy symbol once more and said, "By the might of the Gods, you will be punished! Iomedae's Light burn you!"

The woman cursed as she stumbled out of the smiting light of the Bishop's holy symbol. The damn man was a cleric! She stretched her fingers out and then said, "Great Champion, fight for me! Fight to protect me!"

The cleric frowned and looked at her and said, "Catheil, we know that you have helped the adventurers who broke into Conclavus. All we need to know is if you were given anything by them. If you are merely harboring them, then we can find it in our hearts to be lenient, but either way, you will face a judgement."

Avera cursed for a moment. Had her spell not worked? She gathered the shadows around her and fed them slowly into her small children's bodies. Chanting into their minds, she was about to cast a spell to strengthen them for an attack when the other Bishop moved forward and swung his ax at the first Bishop. The first Bishop stumbled and Ma'm Catheil chuckled. She had been right! The second Bishop was a fighter, and not just any kind of fighter, but it appeared as if he had been taught in the Mountain Barbarian ways. He swung in rage at the cleric and the cleric scrambled to protect himself.

As they fought, Ma'm Catheil spoke into the minds of her children. "Alrenth, Jacobinni, Johsiah, Felicis, Adria, and Moiren; you all help me out of the house, the rest of you keep attacking the Bishops, make sure that they do not leave the house. Do this for you Mother."

The six children that she called came at her beck, shuffling frantically through the house and helped her out of the living room into the main hall and out the front door. The rest of the Children were savage and threw themselves with abandon at the intruders in their home. Ma'm Catheil listened as they hurtled their bodies at the intruders inside of the small place that had become their home.

She didn't blink an eye though. As she stood outside with six of her children, she raised her hands up into the air. She chanted words under her breath and made the few arcane gestures she needed and then pointed at what was once her house. A bolt of lightning flared down on the house and the entirety of the house lit up. Screams were heard from the inside and she once again began her chanting. Nothing could be left of the scene. AS she finished her chanting, she pointed again to her abode and it burst into flames.

She smiled wanly and then pulled up the hood of her cloak. "Come children, we have some people to see in Amaranth." She motioned with her hands and began to walk barefoot across the ground in the direction of the city of Amaranth. the six surviving children looked at the house and then soon followed, scurrying behind her.
