A Week After the Fall: Capital City Amaranth...

Maeiris Faulterwell stood next to her superior in magic on the small balcony overlooking the square. She was quite sure that Maizon would be a more appropriate speaker, however, what they had sent was Verial. Verial Mourne was a Necromancer of no small skill and on top of that, he was also a Bishop, an Inquisitor no less. Verial was a mouthpiece if anything for the Necromancy College, whatever the Dean wanted him to say, he usually said. It was nothing if a perfect arrangement. That he was here in time of need however said much for him as he was more often flitting between the schools. Maeiris was not impressed with him, but she knew he woul dbe best for what was going to happen next.

She looked towards the large crowd that had gathered below and shook her head. "I understand that you were sent here, but under whose authority are you speaking?"

Verial sniffed slightly and then said, "I am here under authority, whose you need not concern yourself with."

Maeiris looked back at her fellow wizard and narrowed her eyes. "Why was Maizon not sent then?"

Varial closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "I was given this task because of my ability to orate to the masses without them panicking. In this case, we have to tell them what it is that is going to happen next."

Maeris looked out to the horizon and then said, "What will be happening then?" She tried to spot the familiar dot on the horizon that was always visible, but she could not see it. She tried to see if the chains were still there and that it was merely a small mistake. She could not see the city however. the familiar shadow of Ivendall could not be seen against the setting of the sun. The shadow of floating earth and the familiar linking of chains that could be seen miles away ont eh horizon was no longer there.

The city had fallen.

Varial looked to Maeiris and then said, "They want to call it The Fall. There was talk that it was a sorceress that did it."

Maeiris shook her head. "There is no sorceress left who is that powerful except for Aiden. She's locked away in her tower. She would not have taken the goodwill that she gathered from the council and used it against them."

Varial bit his lip and then said, "There is talk that Conclaivus might have bit off more than it could chew. Someone went against them and knocked them and the city out of the sky."

Maeiris shook her head. "Who would be capable of killing over 100,000 people? All those people and all that research and magic... No one was able to bring the city back down after that sorceress cursed it during the Sorceress Wars! Who the hell would have that much power now?" Maeiris felt her face heat with the anger of thinking about it all over again.

Varial said nothing and kept his composed look. If she didn't know better, Maeiris would have accused him of being the very thing that he studied magic for. He walked back off the balcony and motioned for her to follow. The people down below did not respond to it, the large murmur of the crowd as it waited for the announcement was still audible in the hallway where they both stood. He looked back down the hallway where other wizards sat and then back at the walls. Maeiris realized that he was looking around for people who might be listening. Apparently satisfied, he leaned in conspiratorially and cupped a hand against his mouth as if he was to whisper a secret. She leaned in to hear what he had to say.

"While no one in the city might have been able to reverse the spell, do remember that the Black Vaults were broken into and that Berandis Under was broken into twice."

Maeiris' felt her skin suddenly drop in temperature ad she turned to him with wide eyes. "What?!" the word came out as a hiss. She had heard rumors that someone had perhaps broken into Berandis Under, but twice was not what she had heard. She thought that whoever had been stupid enough to do it was now trapped below there.

The other wizard nodded his head. "Twice, not once, but twice. The first time we weren't sure who was taken out of there. The second time the prison was broken into, Dragon Riders were released."

Maeiris shook her head. "This is a catastrophe. If word gets out about those break-ins..."

"I don't think that anyone is going to talk about it. The only people who know now are all sworn to secrecy and have had geas' placed on them."

Maeiris made a face, the contempt showing quite clearly in her eyes. "How on earth are you able to talk about it then?"

Varial looked around again and then said, "There are something that the Dean of the Necromantic college does not share with me, but I am privy to overhearing. I saw the Chancellor and Dean speaking in hushed tones and I heard it all."

Maeiris was interested not to hear how he heard it, but whom it was that was discussing it. It appeared that the head of the Conjuration college was in talks with the Dean of the Necromantic college. This would be an interesting piece of information that she would keep for later.

A chime sounded in the hallway and they both started back up into standing positions from their hunched over whispering. Varial nodded to Maeiris and then said, "Now to address the people." he straightened out his robes and readjusted his collar and then walked back out to the balcony. Maeiris watched him with a keen eye and then shook her head as she heard him begin to speak. She turned around and walked down the hallway. Varial's words were rather audible as she walked away and echoed down teh hall.

"Great Wizards of Pernishia, today is a day that many will realize later shall ring through history with the audacity and carnage of what it has wrought. Today we have heard for sure that the City in the Sky, our beloved Ivendall, has fallen."

Maeiris paused for a moment at the end of the hallway and looked back to the balcony. Under her breath, she muttered, "Let justice be done though the heavens fall." She then turned around and walked down the stairs to leave.
